IS MY DONATION TAX-DEDUCTIBLE?

Yes, your donation to Give inLieu Foundation is tax-deductible within the guidelines of U.S. law. Give inLieu Foundation is a public charity with IRS 501(c)(3); EIN 82-3151437.

WHAT PUBLIC CHARITIES MAY I CHOOSE?

You may choose and advise Give inLieu Foundation to make a regrant to virtually any U.S. based public charity that is in good standing with the IRS with 501(c)(3) status. Give inLieu Foundation relies on a pre-approved database maintained by GuideStar that contains the vast majority of U.S. based and IRS qualified public charities.

HOW MUCH OF MY DONATION IS RECEIPTED AS A TAX-DEDUCTIBLE CONTRIBUTION AND WHEN?

100% of your online charitable gift is receipted as a charitable contribution to Give inLieu Foundation advised for regrant to your chosen charity. Email receipts are sent immediately by Give inLieu Foundation upon successful processing of your donation. To claim a donation as a deduction on your U.S. taxes, retain your donation receipt as an official record or you can download your transaction history at the end of every year.

DOES IT COST ME ANYTHING TO DONATE?

The cost of your donation is a flat $1.00 administrative fee as well as the associated credit card processing fees. Unlike other donating platforms that charge you a percentage of your donation, we feel that we should not charge you more because you want to donate more. We wish we could persuade the credit card processing merchants to do the same so more of your money could go to the charities.

WHY DOES MY TAX RECEIPT REFERENCE THE GIVE INLIEU FOUNDATION?

Your contribution is made to Give inLieu Foundation, a nonprofit corporation with federal tax-exempt status, under Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3), that operates a fund to handle donor advised contributions.  It is Give inLieu Foundation’s normal practice to regrant 100% of donor-advised contribution to the qualifying IRS recognized 501(c)(3) organization advised by the donor. You pay $1.00 plus credit card transaction costs.  A regrant to the advised organization is generally made on the 10th of the month following receipt of the advised contribution. That is why your credit card statement will list Give inLieu Foundation, not the charity advised by you for regrant.

IS THERE A MINIMUM DONATION AMOUNT?

Yes, your donation must be at least $10 to be processed through Give inLieu Foundation.

HOW DOES GIVE INLIEU FOUNDATION COMPILE ITS LIST OF
CHARITIES APPROVED FOR REGRANT?

Give inLieu Foundation utilizes a database of 501(c)(3) organizations that is managed and periodically refreshed by GuideStar.  The source for the GuideStar data set is found on IRS Publication 78.

HOW AND WHEN DOES MY DONATION GET DISTRIBUTED TO MY FAVORITE NONPROFIT?

After the Give inLieu Foundation reviews the donation and the donor advisement to a particular charity, the Foundation verifies the tax-exempt status of the advised charity.  The Foundation then notifies the charity of a donation.  The Foundation batches its donations to nonprofits each month and makes a payment on or around the 10th of the following month. For example, if you made a donation on January 20 through inLieu, the qualified nonprofit grantee would receive the funds on or around February 10.

DOES THE RECIPIENT OF MY DONATION SEE THE AMOUNT I AM DONATING?

No, the amount you donate is never disclosed to the recipient nor in the live feed.  Only the nonprofit you have selected to receive your donation will be notified of the amount.

HOW DOES A CHARITY CHANGE THEIR PROFILE IN THE LIST OF CHARITIES?

If a charity needs to modify their profile or upload their logo they will need to do this through GuideStar.

HOW DO I LINK MY FAVORITE CHARITIES TO MY PROFILE?

Select your favorite charities by selecting the slide out menu, select Settings, select Favorite Non-Profits.  Then search and select your favorites..

CAN I TYPE IN A RECIPIENT EMAIL ADDRESS OR PHONE NUMBER THAT IS NOT IN MY CONTACTS?

Yes, once you have selected to give a gift you can select “+” from the contacts and then select “Send to a new friend” where you will be prompted to put in a name along with an email or phone number. You can also send to someone via Twitter. Just select “Send via Twitter” then search for the Twitter handle of the person you want to receive your gift.

HOW DO I MAKE MY GIFT/DONATION PRIVATE SO IT WILL NOT SHOW UP IN THE LIVE FEED?

Make your gift/donation private, by turning off the setting Profile Visible to Public in your profile setting.

WHAT IS A DAF UNDER PAYMENT OPTIONS?

A donor-advised fund, or DAF, is a philanthropic vehicle established at a public charity. It allows donors to make a charitable contribution, receive an immediate tax benefit and then recommend grants from the fund over time.

DOES MY DAF MANAGER/SPONSOR HAVE TO BE A PARTNER WITH INLIEU FOR ME TO BE ABLE TO DONATE FROM MY DAF?

Yes, we can only fulfill grant requests from donors who have funds managed by institutions that are a partner with inLieu.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY DAF MANAGER/SPONSOR IS A PARTNER WITH INLIEU?

When you select to pay by DAF you will be prompted to fill out a profile. You first have to select your institution from the drop down menu.  If you do not see your fund manager/sponsor listed then we have not currently partnered with that at this time.  You can also reach out to our DAF manager and ask them to partner with us. We are always looking to make it easier for people to donate from inLieu.

IS THERE A MINIMUM DONATION WHEN DONATING FROM MY DAF?

This depends on the institution that manages your DAF.  You will be prompted at check-out if your grant request does not meet the minimum requirement set by your fund manager.

WHEN DOES THE NONPROFIT RECEIVE THE FUNDS FROM MY GRANT REQUEST FROM A DAF?

At the end of the month we send all grant requests to the DAF managers/sponsors.  Once they approve the request then they distribute the funds to Give inLieu Foundation and then we distribute them to the nonprofits.  Our goal is to have all distributions made to the nonprofits on the 10th of the month for all donations and grant requests made the previous month.

CAN I SET UP A REOCCURING GIFT/DONATION OR SCHEDULE A FUTURE GIFT?

Unfortunately, at this time you cannot set up a reoccurring gift/donation or schedule a future gift. We are working on adding this feature soon.

HOW DOES THE RECIPIENT OF MY DONATION GET NOTIFIED?

A notification is sent to the recipient by either text message, email message or tweet based on the contact method selected during the gifting process.

HOW DOES THE NONPROFIT GET NOTIFIED OF MY DONATION?

An email notification is automatically sent to the charity you have chosen to receive your donation as soon as the donation has been processed through our credit card merchant, STRIPE.

WHAT INFORMATION IS SENT TO THE CHARITY ABOUT MY DONATION?

The email notification sent to the charity contains the following donation details:  Date, Amount of donation, Donor name and email address. If you selected the “donate anonymous” option then only the recipient (if a gift was made in the name of someone) and message to recipient/nonprofit will be revealed to the charity.

WILL I RECEIVE A NOTIFICATION FROM THE NONPROFIT I DESIGNATED MY DONATION TO GO TO?

The nonprofit is not required to send you a receipt or acknowledgement of your donation unless they would like to.   When you make a donation you will receive a receipt from the Give inLieu Foundation, which serves as your IRS receipt for tax purposes.

WHAT IF I CANNOT FIND THE CHARITY I WOULD LIKE TO DONATE TO IN THE APP?

We rely on the database maintained by GuideStar, which collects information on all registered U.S. based 501(c)(3) nonprofits.  Please check that the charity you are looking for is not part of another nonprofit or files their tax documents under a different name.  You might also try narrowing your search to a City and State and searching only unique words within nonprofit name.

CAN I DOWNLOAD MY TRANSACTION HISTORY?

Unfortunately, you are not able to download your transaction history at this time.  We are working on adding this feature soon.
